TEHRAN (IQNA) – The restoration work at the historic Jamia Masjid (grand mosque) in Srinagar, India’s Jammu and Kashmir began on Tuesday after a gap of 250 years.

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, who heads the Anjuman-e-Awqaf or mosque management, tweeted that to begin with, restoration of the heritage minarets had been taken up under the supervision of experts.

The Mirwaiz delivers his weekly congregational sermon on Friday at the mosque, which was built by Sultan Sikander Shahmiri in 1394.

Prayers at the mosque were disallowed during the Sikh rule in Kashmir from 1820 to 1846.
