Iran, Georgia Discuss Ways to Boost Cultural, Religious Ties

TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian envoy and a Georgian official discussed ways to expand religious and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

Iran’s new cultural attaché to Georgia Ahmad Ali Mehri Ardestani met and held talks with head of Georgia’s Administration of All Muslims Sheikh Ramin Igidev.

The Georgian official assessed the level of bilateral cooperation “positive”, hoping that cultural and religious ties between Muslims of the two countries would be further expanded.

He also provided a report about activities of the center regarding mosques, publications, and conferences. There are 320 mosques in Georgia, out of which 120 mosques belong to Azeri Shias while 200 others belong to Sunnis, he said.

The official also said that 22 mosques have been constructed in the past eight years and building four mosques for the Shia community is on the agenda.

The Iranian envoy, for his part, stressed the need to maintain cooperation between the Iranian embassy and the Administration of All Muslims.

The sides agreed to hold monthly meetings to discuss future cooperation and implementation of earlier plans.
