According to government data, there are more than 18,000 Quranic schools in towns and cities across Algeria.

Currently, there are nearly one million children taking the courses offered in these schools, al-Arabi al-Jadid website reported.

The number of those taking the courses rises every year with the coming of summer holidays.

They learn Tajweed rules and Quran recitation and memorize the Holy Book.

Families believe that by taking the courses, their children learn the Quran and religious values and also stay away from the harms of the cyberspace and activities that may lead them astray.

Zain Bilmahdi, director of a Quran school in the city of Manasir, Tebessa Province, says these schools help to guide children to a spiritual atmosphere.

They have been successful in teaching Quran memorization to the children and enhancing their social interactions, he added.

The country’s Awqaf ministry has underlined the role of these schools in developing the teaching of the Quran.

Followers of Islam make up about ninety-nine percent of the country's population.
