Mohamed al-Saklawi was reciting the Quran during a memorial service recently when a man from the audience went to stand beside him to praise his performance.
A video clip shared in social media shows al-Saklawi having a disrespectful gesture in reaction to the man’s move.
The footage drew widespread criticism from social media users, prompting the association to ban him from reciting the Quran at the Quran Radio for one year, Arabi21 website reported.
Al-Saklawi has apologized for his behavior while reciting the Holy Book, saying his reaction was unintentional.
Sheikh Sidiq Mahmoud al-Minshawi, secretary general of the association, said a qari should not be affect by the actions of the audience when he is reciting the Quran.
He added that the association monitors the behaviors of qaris in order to maintain the prestige of Quran reciters.
While some social media users believe al-Saklawi should not have been suspended from the Quran Radio the after apologizing, others say it is the right move.
