TEHRAN (IQNA) – The sixth edition of Port Said international Quran competition kicked off on Friday in the namesake Egyptian city.

A total of 65 contenders from 41 countries will compete in the event in different categories including Quran memorization, supplication, and Ibtihal.

This edition of the international Quranic event has been named after late Sheikh Nasreddin Tubar, one of the country’s renowned qaris and Ibtihal reciters who died in 1986.

The opening ceremony was held with attendance of Egyptian officials including Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mukhtar Gomaa.

The ceremony started with recitation of verses from the holy Quran and an Ibtihal performance. A number of religious scholars and their families were also honored in the event.

In addition to Egypt, representatives from the UAE, Tunisia, Algeria, Sudan, Palestine, Jordan, Nigeria, Kenya, Canada, Lebanon, Morocco, America, Yemen, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Uganda, Pakistan, Chad, and India are also participating in the contest.

In the fifth edition of the competition last year, Egyptian representatives won all top prizes.

Egypt is a country in North Africa with a population of around 100 million.

Muslims account for around 90 percent of the country’s total population.

Quranic activities are very common in the Arab country and many of the Muslim world’s top qaris in the past and present have been Egyptian.
