TEHRAN (IQNA) – Faith, patience, Khushu (fear of God), humbleness before one’s spouse, giving charity, fasting, chastity and saying prayers are among the characteristics that the Quran enumerates for good men and women.

This is according to Mohammad Ali Rezaei Esfahani, a seminary teacher, who made the remarks while addressing an event. What follows are excerpts from his remarks:

In Verse 34 of Surah An-Nisa, God refers to righteous women. These are women favored by the Quran: “Righteous women are obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah has guarded.”

According to this verse, humbleness before husband is a favored characteristic of women. They should also be haughty before unrelated men. Women should also keep their husband’s secret and their reputation.

In Hadiths, a series of moral, emotional, social, and other rights are mentioned for women.

They should be provided with good food and enjoy fruits of the season. In Eids and festivities they should be given special meals and they also have the right to have clothes suitable for different seasons.

In Imam Sajjad’s (AS) Risalat al-Huquq (Treatise on Rights), there are many references to such rights. For example, a husband has no right to insult his wife or beat her. If she did something out of ignorance, the husband should forgive her.

It has also been narrated from the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that Angel Gabriel laid a lot of emphasis on treating women well, not frowning at them and not imposing anything on them.

Men are advised to be kind to women and be a source of hope for them. Even if men cannot provide for women what they want, they are urged to give a promise and fulfil it whenever they can.

Many divorces happen because men do not know how to keep their wife hopeful and optimistic about future and instead make them lose hope.
