IQNA – A Lebanese scholar residing in Sweden described Iran’s recent retaliatory attack on occupied Palestinian territories as the Islamic Republic’s legitimate right.

Lebanese scholar Sheikh Youssef Qarout

The attack was in accordance to international laws and a courageous move in the face of the Zionist regime’s crimes, Sheikh Youssef Qarout said while addressing an international webinar held on Sunday about Iran’s unprecedented missile and drone strike on the Zionist regime.

Organized by the International Quran News Agency (IQNA), the webinar, titled “True Promise; Iranian Might and Punishing the Aggressor” was also addressed by Head of the Bahrain Human Rights Society Baqer Darwish, representative of the Lebanese Amal movement Salah Fahs, and Cultural Deputy of the University of Religions and Sects Abbas Khameyar.

On April 1, the Israeli regime committed a terrorist attack against Iran’s diplomatic premises in the Syrian capital Damascus.

The Israeli attack resulted in the martyrdom of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), his deputy, General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and five of their accompanying officers.

Retaliating against the attack, the IRGC targeted the occupied territories late on Saturday with a barrage of drones and missiles. The retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation True Promise, has inflicted damage on Israeli military bases across the occupied territories.

Following the reprisal, Iran both relayed the message that it viewed the matter as “concluded,” and also warned of a “bigger” response in case the regime or its allies target Iran.

In his speech at the Sunday webinar, Sheikh Qarout said Iran’s operation defined new rules in confrontation with the Israeli regime and created major and strategic equations in the region.

The Tel Aviv regime was confronted after years of breaking international laws and violating international, human and moral norms without being held to account, the Lebanese cleric stated.

He deplored the UN Security Council’s inaction regarding the Israeli regime’s attack on Iran’s diplomatic mission in Damascus, saying if the UN body had fulfilled its responsibility regarding the attack, Iran would not have launched the operation against Israel.

The UNSC failed to act and therefore Iran acted in accordance with international laws, including Article 51 of the UN Charter, he said.

Sheikh Qarout slammed those countries, especially in the West, that condemned Iran’s legitimate and legal move while failing to condemn months of Israeli crimes and genocidal war in the Gaza Strip.

He cited the hypocritical remarks by UK Foreign Minister David Cameron who said an attack on the British embassy anywhere would trigger the UK’s response, and noted that Cameron at the same time described Iran’s response to the Israeli attack on its consulate a reckless move.
